Sometimes you just need comfort food.
Growing up, brownie mix always lived in our cupboard. And some days, a warm batch of Duncan Hines brownies was enough to make the world feel right again.
When I had my own kids, I somehow carried that same rhythm forward.
A bad grade on a test. A breakup. Not getting into the starting lineup when the coach said you would.
Out came the mixing bowl. Flour, sugar, eggs, etc. Oven preheated to 350.
The brownies never fixed the thing that had gone wrong. They didn’t change the grade, the breakup or the coach’s decision.
But somehow, they helped.
Maybe it was the smell filling the kitchen. Maybe it was having something warm to eat while you regrouped. Maybe it was just the familiarity of it all.
Whatever it was, brownies became what we did when life knocked someone a little sideways.
The kids are grown now. The house is quieter. There aren’t many bad grades or starting lineups walking through my door anymore.
But life still has a way of rattling you.
And apparently, I still know what to do.
This week, the brownies were made.

TODAY’S PICKS
THE FEATURE
You Gotta Want The Ball.
One phrase from the bleachers followed me home long after the games ended, and it wasn't about sports anymore.
THE REFLECTION
The Secret To A Happy Marriage.
Twenty-four years of the same weekly picnic on the same bench, and neither of them can fully explain why it still works.
Small Victory.
I called someone and they actually picked up. No one warned me it would feel this good.
Feature Series
The Concert Wasn't the Point.
A party bus, a broken door, and a Dave Matthews concert that turned out to be the least interesting part of the night.
If you know someone who'd love this, send it to them.
That's the whole ask.
There's something in it for you too.
Details below.
My answer:
The coffee my husband makes every morning. I don’t think he’s actually making it for me, but he always leaves enough for me. It’s such a small thing, but maybe that’s what keeps a relationship going. Remembering there are two of you, one cup at a time.
